Jeep announces plug-in hybrid Jeep Renegade by 2020 | San Marcos CDJR

The parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat, announced earlier this week that they plan to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the popular Jeep Renegade in early 2020. It comes on the heels of last year’s announcement that Fiat-Chrysler will also offer a Jeep  Wrangler hybrid model by 2020 as well.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles have both gasoline engine and a battery pack that work in tandem to extend fuel economy, with either the battery, gasoline engine or both simultaneously providing power.

In the new five-year plan released earlier this year, FCA said it would invest $10.4 billion dollars in electric and hybrid technology by 2022, including introducing over 60 models with battery or hybrid powertrains. Plans for Jeep call for ten plug-in hybrid vehicles and four fully electric vehicles within five years.

Chrysler has gotten a jump on the rest of the world by offering the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. The world’s first hybrid minivan, the 2019 Pacifica hybrid features mileage of over 84 miles per gallon, or can run on its battery only for more than 30 miles. The 2019 Ram 1500 also features an available system called eTorque, which uses a generator to send excess power to a battery pack mounted in the cab. When towing or hauling, the generator can instantly switch to an electric motor, sending 130 ft-lbs. of torque to the crank.

The FCA plant in Melfi, Italy will produce the plug-in hybrid 2020 Renegade. The plant currently produces all Renegade models, with 742,000 examples built there since 2014. The company’s plans call for a $230 million investment in the Melfi factory to gear up for the production of electric and hybrid powertrains. The 2019 Renegade received a major update and redesign for the new model year, in addition to a new 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood, jointing the 2.4 liter four-cylinder. The 1.3-liter turbo four is expected to be the gasoline component of the 2020 Renegade’s new PHEV system.

Jeep has not announced the range and mileage of the 2020 Jeep Renegade plug-in-hybrid, but if the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica is any measure, mileage in the much lighter and more compact Renegade should be sky high.
